Another hand struck Carolyn across the face, knocking her off balance until she hit the ground. She spat out a mouthful of dead grass and dirt. Her lip stung in several different places where it’d been split open, tiny rivulets of blood dried across her chin.

“OK, I don’t know about you, but this is getting old,” the leader of the mysterious group said in an agitated tone. “Tell me how many people are down in that hole in the ground you call a home!”

His voice echoed off the trees but Carolyn no longer had hopes of anyone hearing it. She no longer believed anyone would come looking for her. It’d been two days of this with no end in sight. Any time she fell asleep someone would kick her awake. They only gave her enough food and water to keep her alive, barely. She was exhausted and beaten and on the verge of delirium, but through it all she’d kept her mouth shut. She hadn’t told them a single thing about the bunker and she never would. A part of her wished they would just kill her and get it over with.

Carolyn looked up into his creased, tanned face with tight lips and eyes blazing with hatred. He ran his hands through his dark, gray-speckled hair in frustration as he turned away from her. She knew she was getting under her skin, the only problem was she didn’t know what he’d do because of it. She was scared, she couldn’t deny that but she also didn’t have to show it or admit it. As he cursed with his back turned to her she took in a long, steadying breath and let it escape slowly from her bruised lips. It worked. She felt her heart rate decline as she regained control of her shaking body again.

Suddenly, the man’s head snapped up, his body a dark shadow in the silhouette of the crackling fire. “Who the hell is watching the entrance to the bunker?”

There were a few other men standing around with their hands in their pockets. They looked at each other, dumbfounded, shrugging their shoulders to avoid the blame. The women and children who were huddled against the tree trunks together, trying to get what sleep they could after a meager meal, didn’t even acknowledge the question.

“Well, this is great! Who knows how many of them have come out of their hidey hole by now! How many are on their way right now to recover this one! I can’t believe what a bunch of stupid—” He went on a rampage fitting of a drunken and offended sailor. Carolyn couldn’t help grinning to herself. Maybe it was possible someone was out there looking for her. The thought made her stomach flutter with excitement. She didn’t know how much longer she could take being a hostage to these people.

“What the hell are you smiling at?” the man growled. Carolyn gave a start, formerly lost in her own world of thoughts until he brought her back with a jolt.
